I search for that flame
I search for that fire
Through the dark I search
For that eternal light
Through the cobwebs of pain
I search for that true light
A glimmer in the distance
A shine in the dark
It feels so near
That it brought a smile
It feels like bliss
It feels like peace
A breath of air I release
A triumph I feel
Where imagination runs wild

Did we fly like an eagle not really but those dizzy heights
felt like one. A journey like no other, a trek like no other.

A mistaken journey landed us in one of the most fun trip I have taken.

As I geared for the journey to Sar Pass, with words of wisdom from
the internet, anticipation creating a riot within myself. Excitement, fear intermingled together, I traveled via Delhi, an overnight buses from Delhi to Bhuntur and
local buses from there on to Kasol, dropped me to the base camp.

As we overlooked the base Camp at Kasol, the fear returned to what have I done. Dreading the many stairs to the base camp, we braved ourselves with huge bags to reach the base camp. The roar of Parvati river was astounding.

At the base camp, post our registration we were alloted tents. I have never
done camping or stayed in a tent so this was a novel experience. Our tent had 9
girls including myself and I looked around speculatively on how to fit in, we
were in for a bigger surprise.

After we had settled in, orientation was held by the field
director. I need to commend the field director as he has to keep repeating the same text day in and day out for each group, talk about monotony. YHAI is known for arranging scrumptious meals and this trek was no different with stringent time schedule. A camp fire performance and hot bournvita later we packed ourselves in our sleeping bags. I now know what a larva feels like. All tied up and cant move much.

At 5.30 am, a whistle woke us up for tea. Do you know the feeling of sleeping on a hard ground and woken mid sleep, thats how i felt with each and every muscle creaking. Dragging our feet, we got ready for the morning
exercises, running and stretching and behaving like stroke victims. We were happy to be back at 8 for
some breakfast, only to leave at 830 for a walk in the park. Now this is not your regular park walk, imagine 2 kms of uphill walking on narrow path with pebbles all over and altitude.

This walk was no mean feat, as I was breathless after 500m
on the incline. Making me realise how
out of shape, I was heaving my way through when we finally reached the river, our
break point. The alluring Parvati river was a nice place to bask in. We were given an hour to explore the area. The warm
sun with the calming sound of the running water had me lazing like a cat, content.

We returned to the base camp around around noon for another round of orientation
and preparation for our campfire performance. Our group put up a stellar
performance and were literally crowned the best campfire of the year
(conditions applied as there were other groups after us too). A special mention to JD, he rocked the
performance with his mange meri baro act. Imagine a professional body builder
enacting the role of the heroine and dance word for word. It was a laugh riot
with Zingat played as a group performance. It was an amazing prelude to the
coming days ahead.

For the next day, rappelling and rock climbing were scheduled as part of the acclimatization exercise. However we still had one
important step before that and it was morning exercises. Dragging our feet
along with the next batch we ran and stretched. After breakfast, all of us marched for rappelling and I like a good citizen sat at the back, content under the warm sun. I managed to skip rappelling and rock climbing as it wasn't compulsory and didn't believe gravity or height was working in my favor.

The guys attempted rock climbing, some clinging like spiderman and others moving like it was a daily commute. My gold seat ensured me a viewing as well as some time to bond with nature as we were leaving for our trek the next day.

Back at the camp, all of us were busy weighing and repacking our bags for the trek. We were asked to carry only essentials and that was a dilemma one can do without. One of the girls actually emptied after the tooth paste to reduce weight and all the girls managed to carry a decent weight. The guys were another story with some carrying bags weighing 10 kgs. We all prepared ourselves for the long journey ahead...

Solace in the dark
The soothing blackness of the night
Shrouded in my mind
Brightness too blaring
Light's a truth I cant forsake
Stronger footsteps I take
Looking out of the window as I wait for you, I wonder where you are. The sun is almost down and still you are no where in sight. I cannot take my eyes off in case I miss your arrival. Your abode waits for you.

Your voice wakes me up every morning though the songs you sing is not for me.

Every day I see you struggle and watch like a silent spectator. Not any more, today I had to intervene. Your meal spread I have laid out, hoping my efforts do not go in vain.

Oh little bird, how I wait year on year for you to lay little birdies on my ledge.

Come little birdie come as I promise no crow will stray near your nest.
The idea seemed better in head than on paper :-)

Today was the most important day as I had to SHOP and I hate
to shop. We at home always try to pick a silk saree on our visits to different
places. I still hate shopping and don’t wear sarees so imagine my plight while
trying to buy one.

We had booked a cab for the day so we didn’t have to try and
park at different places. We decided to head to T nagar, the shopping heaven
for sarees. We entered one of the first stores for just sight -seeing and I was
lost.

To be honest, I didn’t understand what to see. My friend
wanted to picks some stuff for a wedding and I promptly helped her in selecting
stuff. I was good in rummaging through bundles of clothes and found the perfect
set for my friend.

All that searching made me hungry and I wanted to try rabbit
biryani (don’t cringe, Chennai supposedly sells fabulous rabbit biryani) but I was
in no luck. We thought one place sold it but didn’t look good enough to sit and
eat. So some rabbit was saved that day.

My friend knew of another nice place to eat called
Thalapakatti, not sure why I could not pronounce it right. I kept calling it
Thalakapatti. The only way I remember the right name till today is basis the
logic and that I always get the name wrong the first time. Not sure what will
happen when I get it right the first time.

Anyways we ordered the thalapakatti special & pepper
chicken. The pepper chicken surely burnt a hole in my stomach with the fire it
was bellowing as it went down. I had to ordered a badam milkshake to try
extinguish the burn. The chicken was awaesome, the biryani was no less. After sumptuous
meal along with a health hazard – burn at your own risk. We decided we have to
pick sarees.

We hadn’t even started buying sarees, so we went to the
biggest store and that’s where the never ending ordeal started. We started by
selecting sarees for my friend’s mom. After searching to a whole bundle of
selection, we found a pretty crepe saree. While selecting a saree for her mom,
my friend managed to pick a pink saree.

Now the search was for a saree for my collection. I didn’t really
have a budget just basic requirement. A bright, big board silk saree and the
search started. In the big store, they didn’t pay any attention to me and I was
royally ignored so we started searching at other stores. With no luck we
started travelling the city to find a good choice. I must have spent atleast
2/3 hours trying to buy a saree. Finally out of tiredness, boredom or frustration
not sure, I picked one saree and said thank for ending the ordeal. We were
literally at the other end of town. Next I had to pick the next most famous
item in Chennai… you guessed it wrong. Its towels, I picked a couple not sure
why and was exhausted by the end of it.

I forgot to mention, i picked a red saree with some design at the bottom.

To help our cause, it started raining and there was traffic
everywhere. Next stop was to pick some stuff for my journey back and as luck
would have it, the lights go off and it is approaching closing time. I quickly
picked some stuff up and hopped in the car.

By the time, I reached home, I was dead. We had no energy to
go anywhere and decided to order in. Lol and behold we could not decide what to
order and finally called up little Italy and ordered some pasta.

I was tried and had packing to do, tomorrow was the day I was
travelling back.

Mumbai here I come

Today was an action planned day but the sleep gods were kind to me and I slept in. Not that late, was up at around 800ishhhhhh.

My friend had planned for breakfast on the way at a place called Tish or something. They make amazing crossaint sandwiches. Chennai food scene is to fall in love with. The break fast filled and fueled me up for our journey to Mahabalipuram or the cool Chennai lingo calling it Mahabs.

The drive from Chennai to Mahabs was around 2 odd hours. We say some ancient rocks and craving and settled in the gardens overlooking the city. After some time, we decided it was lunch time (it was a food trip), We went to this place called Moonrakers for lunch and it was filling up on a Friday. The place is known for its fish.

We ordered crab masala, fish fry and some cold beverages with roti. The meal was so filling that I had to drink lemon juice with salt to be able to move. I felt like we would need a crane to lift me from my spot. The day was not done yet and we had to see the beach in a beach city.

We walked down to the beach and I didnt carry of my hair any longer. It was amazing to see the strong waves and the way they were crashing onto the sides of an hotel.

I was surprised to see people surfing and since I do not much of surfing maybe the waves were safe.

After having a fill of the waves, we drove back to the city to avoid the evening rush on the highway.

We made it back to the city in good time and had time in our hands, so we decided to explore the other beach stretches in chennai.

We landed up at Elliot's beach and sat admiring the setting sun. Not sure how long we sat there but the gentle waves in comparison to the waves at Mahabs was a pleasant change.

The Fruit Shop at Greams road was next on the agenda on the must eat places, I decided to try the apricot milkshake while my friend had pomegranate. The milkshake was one of the best I had had in a while considering I managed to convince my friend to let go of her pomegranate shake in the future.

Content we drove around the city wondering the next hot spot to visit, when we decided to head towards the beach near my friend's place.

We ended snacking at Subway, but all the food I had eaten had me loaded up and I just couldn't eat more. I ended up eating a toast and the chocolate cookie at Subway.

The crabs & the milkshake had made a permanent place in my stomach didn't want to share it with other foods.

Did I fall asleep, not really, we spent hours catching up on stuff and feasting on ice creams well into the night.

I could not believe I had just one more day left in Chennai.

As trip goes, this was my first gastronomic trip. Was it
planned, not really but I guess you can enjoy a place better via its food.
Chennai was a place where I went with an open view .

Chennai by itself was an expected destination in June. But
when the time is right, trips just happen.

The train journey was long and believe me Chennai express
train is not like the movie train. I kept looking for the waterfall but could
not find one.

With no plan in mind I landed up at Chennai station where my
friend was waiting for me. After some mis-communication and she waiting for me
for half an hour, I reached hot and humid Chennai and I come from Bombay, this was hot.

Too exhausted to do anything, my friend has ordered some food and I just crashed.

I know most of the people love mornings and I am not one of them.
Strangely Chennai woke me up early not so much bright though. After some break fast, I was too tired to do anything and just caught up on shows and office work while on leave.

We hadn't planned much for the day as we both had some work to finish. The most important thing for me was to cut my hair and that was nicely done at one of the salons.

Not sure how but the CCD sandwiches in Chennai tasted better than Bombay (Cant blame it on hunger). After a nice fill of sandwich and nanchos ( i like to call mexican masala papads) we went dessert tasting to an amazing place called Sandy chocolate Laboratory. I idolize desserts and this was heaven on earth and the desserts took me to another place. Spirits never get me high but a good dessert and I am in the sky flying.

We shared an amazing molten lava cake with icecream and I have been going ga-ga over it ever since. Followed by jar desserts, I was stuffed else would have tried everything. With filled belly and soul we drove down to the beach near my friend's place. And that was the doomed hour for me as my newly set fabulous hair became of mass of dry leaves sticking in all direction.
I have the most frizzy hair in the world.

One question I kept asking myself and haven't found an answer yet how did Chennai get some much sand. I kept walking to reach the water and the frizz in my hair was not helping.

After a satisfied day we headed home.

Saying our byes to Bikaner we set towards the desert. The anticipation was palpable in the air, sand for me was a plaything representing saline, wide open spaces, water…

In Jaisalmer, sand was a way of life, an instinct to survive and thrive. It is quite strange throughout the trip we never sang any songs or played the usual travel games. The landscape had us captivated especially on the way to Jaisalmer. The land was so flat you could see for miles and miles on stretch. The shrubs were no barrier to the line of sight. The shades of pink in the sand were unreal and spectacular.

The road had no pot holes and that was a surprise. But the best bit was the illusion of water on the road. Ever so often on a long stretch of road it felt like there was water but when we crossed the distance it was plain road. It frightens me to think about the thirsty travelers who would have lost their way in this flat land.

We couldn’t get enough of the amazing land and surprisingly our driver also took long to drive the distance from Bikaner to Jaisalmer. I guess the landscape was filling us soul and body and we didn’t realize that we had skipped lunch. Finally we stopped at a dhaba and after some weird quality check we went to one. The dhaba owners were friendly and you could see the toil on their faces, the harsh sun had added years to kids too. Jaisalmer is close to the India/Pakistan border and we could see military on the road.

At the dhaba, we made do with tea and biscuits as surprisingly they don’t stock food. The dhaba guys had story to tell how the bombs from the India Pak war still adorn the deserts. We were intrigued but didn’t have the stamina to travel that far. So with biscuit in our belly we continued our journey to Khuri a desert place in Jaisalmer. After a lot of research on the net, we had found a quaint place called Khuri which has smaller dunes but for a vast portion of the land. As our luck could have it we reached Khuri at around 8.30 pm.

While we were trying to arrange a stay for our driver, he had managed to escape with the car to meet his friend along with my shoes. We realized that he had travelled back to Jaisalmer and I was left with no shoes.

The owner of the place (this is literally a basic stay in its truest sense) told us that the camels for the day had left at 4.30 pm. Can you believe our shock after lot of cajoling he agreed to send another set of camels to take us to the desert. Lady luck was favoring us with regard to time; we had to wait for dinner as all the guests staying at the place had not arrived. So after waiting for ages, we all ate together and began our journey to the desert. As the stay in the desert was out in the open with no tents, we decided to pack ourselves with warm clothes. In December, the temperature hovers around 0 degree C in the night and I had borrowed my Dad’s shoes, yes, I fit into them perfectly.

So gearing ourselves up, we climbed the camel which is a task in itself. We could not see the road as it was pitch black. And with every sway of the camel, we were holding onto to our lives. I must have prayed to all the gods as my sibling and 1 were on 1 camel and holding onto the rope was difficult. With every rise, it’s amazing the way the camel moves, its literally sitting on a see saw. We kept going up and down. I keep wondering if I bruised the camel with the way I was holding the rope.

Finally we reached our destination in 15 mins, we weren’t happy as we could see the city lights and insisted the camel drivers take us further. They had their excuses ready that it was late to travel in the night. We knew it was all reason and agreed if they could take us a little further away from the city lights.
At Kharni, we realized that we did not have any bookings for the night and sort guidance from the one and only divine ‘World Wide Web’. The source of all joys and sorrows proved once again that there is divine intervention always.

So armed with contacts, we set off calling prospective hotel owners for accommodation. This was tricky as we were looking for a place to stay on Christmas Day. Our driver was more than accommodating to show us his reference, this after he didn’t know the roads and kept moving in circles. So we enjoyed the sights of the busy Bikaner streets with all their fried stuff and the local delicacies. However we didn’t get a chance to sample any. With longing eyes we moved ahead.

Finally, the driver found his way out of the Bikaner streets where cattle were more adamant then human. He took us to a hotel which wasn’t to our preference and mentioned that he should drive down to the one we had spoken about. The driver had all the possible reasons of why he could not take us to the hotel but he didn’t know he was dealing with tougher breed of people.

After our insistence, we were finally led to the hotel of our choice. It was on the outskirts but a nice residence. We managed to have a sumptuous meal under the open sky with bonfire to keep us warm. Great food was accompanied by great conversation. There was an Australian couple and we spoke into the night from religion to politics to development. I believe we were on our way to finding solution to world peace. Unfortunately the conversation was cut short by the arrival of another group.

A crowd which initially was not at all welcome but had some surprises in store for me. It was a mix group of people from different background who were part of a small tour. One of them was my colleague who had a big surprise for me. My best friend Deeps was part of the group and she was staying in the hotel room. We decided to play a prank on her. I knocked on her door calling out room service. I still kept knocking irritating her to no ends. Finally when she opened the door, I am sure her scream could be heard all the way to Jaipur.

All intelligent conversation was out of the door and most important girl talk began. There was no stopping the flood gates of memory considering we rarely meet up. This was a pleasant surprise. My folks heard the scream and were wondering what had happened.

Unfortunately, Deeps was travelling back early next morning and we had to keep conversation short to a couple of hours. She did get a chance to scream again next morning on seeing my mom who looks like my elder sister. So for her it was a screamathlon. The journey back must have rested her vocal cords.

In the morning after breakfast we ventured out to see Junagarh Fort. This is a must see fort if you are interested in the armoury. I was in awe seeing all the weapons, especially the ingenious techniques used in the daggers. There were daggers with pistols or levers which opened up in the stomach when stabbed. I mean people really think of ways of killing. It must have been a meticulous study.

As all forts in Rajasthan, this one too had a Sheesh mahal (glass palace), Badal Mahal (Cloud palace) etc, in all honestly these are just rooms and not really a palace as such as they are within the fort. Although the Badal Mahal in Junagarh was amazing as it had a technique wherein water came in through channels and cooled the room also they had developed some sort of a sprinkler system.

December is a crowded month to visit Rajasthan and there were loads of tourist everywhere. Enjoying the armoury section was kind of difficult with people jostling to take pictures of swords they weren’t bothering to read about.

Although Junagarh was the best fort I had seen in Rajasthan, armoury is all I need to say.

It was time to say good bye to Bikaner and its bright colors of pink and orange and red.

Karni Mata

Like Nomads we set off on our journey towards the desert, the golden land. I guess the other hitch in our journey was that we never left the hotel till 10.30.

With the change in our schedule, we did not have any bookings for Bikaner. We liked to believe that nothing is impossible and left our worries for later.

The journey from Jaipur to Bikaner is around 4 hours, considering the fabulous driver we had, we took more than 6 hours.

The speedometer kept showing us that we driving at 100km/hr to be honest, it felt a lot lesser. But then I cannot be a judge of speed as I once banged a car at 5km/hr speed.

The amazing bit about Rajasthan is that the highways are in excellent condition, considering Bombay roads, this was a blessing.
The land is so flat, you can literally see into great distance. This was the first we would be seeing a desert and we could wait to see the majestic Thar.

Our first stop was the famous Kharni Mata temple at Deshnoke, this temple is known for fulfilling wishes. The important element is that this is the only rat temple. People come from afar to worship here.

You can see rats scampering around everywhere. We felt like warriors set for battle. I am petrified of rats and these aren't mere rats, these are gigantic rodents and they have freedom to roam all across.

We reluctantly handed over our shoes, there was no way I was forsaking my socks.
I am amazed at my bravery and I believe I deserved an award for the exemplary bravery I showed amongst my enemies. I took the family camera and went about clicking photographs while my family looked for a safe haven where there were fewer rats.

I doubt you there was a supposedly safe haven. My sibling kept telling me to get down with it and move out. But I had to do justice to the family photos and the rats kept moving. I couldn't get good pics.

I was so engrossed in clicking photos that a lady came and stood besides me and I almost yelled. Luckily for me, I did not yell out loud, else what am embarrassment during pooja.

It was a fun experience. This one place one should visit as it is definitely an experience.

The next day, bright and early we waited for our car. We weren't taking any chances today.
Our car duly arrived on time but can any of our journey be smooth. Nope, all our planning and booking and advance payments cannot stop from calamity striking us.

The driver tells us that we are scheduled to drive to Shekhawati region on the same day when we had specifically confirmed that the trip was scheduled for the next day. Today was for sight seeing in the outskirts of Jaipur.

So starts the day, talking and arguing with the agency. The agency guy keeps mincing our words and no amount of reasoning works. Then the driver suggest we tell him to cancel the deal. That seems to pacify the agency guy but oh boy how wrong we were.

The driver was trying to make a deal with us to avoid the agency and give him the contract for our 10 day tour to take us around. We were in 2 minds as the morning conversation had already soured us but were left with no option.

We took the advise and the agency guy asked us to take the car for the day. We spend the day seeing Amber fort which is on the outskirts. After marveling at Amber fort, it is a spectacular fort but not the most memorable I must say. I had to refer to the pictures to remember it. After Amber we went to Jaigarh fort which has the biggest canon. Now that is spectacular. Seems it was only fired once and the cannon ball was around 27 kgs.

After the fort visits, we referred to our sheets for good places to eat as we had skipped lunch. One of our travel party was ill after the previous night Lal maas (red meat) so we allowed our stomachs to settle. The next item on our agenda now was food.

We had heard praises of Rawat kachoris and had to try some onion kachoris. What we didn't know was the driver was cooking up a story behind our backs while we enjoyed piping hot kachoris and lassi.

We were supposed to go to Choki Dhani when he tells us that the agency is going to deduct 75% of the advance that was paid. We realised that these guys were trying to take us for a ride. We insisted to speak to the agency guy with whom we had transacted however the driver kept telling us to take to some other supervisor. We knew these guys were up to something. We asked them to take us to the police station and put us online with the agency guy we had transacted. The agency guy finally agreed to deduct the amount we spoke in the morning however our Choki Dhani dream was down the drain.

Even the driver tells us that he needs to go to the agency to give the balance payment back. As if, considering they were just trying to cheat us.

On we go on our search for a new car for our planned itinerary. Our evening is spent speaking to the hotel desk arranging for a car.

In the meanwhile we are worried though not disheartened as we knew we could manage from this tight spot only with a lighter pocket. So be it, we were on a vacation to Rajasthan so we decided to try some more famous cuisine at another recommended place.

Off we went to Santosh Bhoganalaya and tried the Dal batti chorma. It was fun, now this was a thali but we had already eaten a kachori and had lassi about 2 hours ago and were stuffed. We ended up eating just a dal batti in the entire thali.

Post dinner, we head back to pack as next day starts our caravan for the tour across Rajasthan.

Lost in the myriads, stands the magnificent pink walls of Jaipur. So begins my travelogue of the recent trip.

Fun, adventurous, astounding are some of the words that come to mind. Confusion is another word that stems in my mind but that's more from a writing perspective - do I want a monologue article on how I traveled or baffle myself with varied places of interest.

Like an ever excited trooper (Though my face belies it), we set on our grand tour of Rajasthan. Oh we were in for a surprise.

Our first port of call was Jaipur - Pink City. I will be lying if I said the noise & traffic didn't surprise me. Packed with information from the net we set off on the grand tour of the city. We avoided the taxi for the day and decided instead to take the bus. With our maps, we ended up at Hawa Mahal, the place has some 900 odd windows, not sure of those though. I liked the view from the top of Hawa Mahal, you could see the city all around you. The sight of the entire city says a lot.

During my tour of Rajasthan, I have always wondered how did the princesses & queens tread the narrow steps in their heavy jewelry and clothes. They could give a weight lifter, a run for their money.

Post Hawa Mahal, we traveled to Jantar Mantar. Now that is some place, brimming full of knowledge. It is amazing how the king put together different instruments to tell time. And these are humongous & astounding instruments.

There were a group of school kids visiting Jantar Mantar which just helped us in our quest for knowledge. The audio guide was horrible and confused me further.

Lunch beckoned us and we went to a popular restaurant Handi. On the local cuisine, I had an amazing guide in my sibling who knew all about what I should eat. We tried the Rajasthani thali along with Lal Maas , the star dish for us was the Lal Maas. Enough to make you sweat out.

After our scrumptous meal, we set off to shop. Jaipur surely makes you work out for a good deal.
Shopping was shopping, long and painful after multiple store visits, we were happy with our few purchases.

All the shopping made us very tired and we ended up at Spice Court. We had heard quite good reviews of the place and they were quite true.

As we adventurous and didn't hire a car for the day, we had to fend for ourselves. After a lot of hassling managed to get a rickshaw. We duly gave him the hotel name and the popular location and what does he do. Drops us of at the popular location and ask us to walk the remaining distance.

We were adamant and insisted that there was a deal to drop us to our hotel. Luckily for us another rick guy told him that he should drop us as it was barely any distance from where we were stationed.
He finally agreed to drop us. So here we were safe and sound back at the hotel at 12 in the night, all geared up for the next day.

In the woods I walk
a path of green and brown
the welcome chirps
announcing the arrival like a crown

The wind cooling my stride
and light on my path
Carrying my presence
for all around

The calm feels me up
enthralling me with peace
The call of the waves
becoming me to them

Green to brown and blue
the temptation strong to blend
submitting to the call of the nature
Into the welcoming arms of the waves.
Its rare a song makes me want to jump and write. I know I have been moved to tears or turned thoughtful on hearing different songs.

When I first heard 'Brothers in Arms', I am not sure what happened, the next thing I know tears were streaming down my eyes. The most recent song was Demons by Imagine Dragrons which moved me to a pensive mood.

I have enjoyed over time a fair share of Hindi songs, where the tune was peppy or energetic. Recently I heard a new song and I am perplexed what emotion it evokes. As one thing is for sure it can't be ignored.

The song in question is from Ram Leela where Ranveer Singh is the object of attention. Not sure what, I mostly blame the video, it reminds me of a peacock flaunting it's feathers.

Doesn't help that the colors he has worn resembles a peacock. Everytime I see or even hear it, I can't hep picturising a peacock fluttering it's feathers in the rain. It brings a smile on my face.

The song does seem like a bad day for the peacock and even he must be shuddering on this comparison.
Weren't his scrawny legs even an embarrassment that a song is now an added injury.

Forgive me oh majestic bird !!! but the comparison in my mind stays and there is no help.

Till another bird can replace the dancing, the peacock dance is tagged to this song.
